Dubai has embarked on a monumental AED 30 billion project, known as the 'Tasreef' project, aimed at revolutionizing its rainwater drainage infrastructure to prepare for future climate challenges. Approved by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, this initiative will increase the city's rainwater drainage capacity by an impressive 700%, ensuring Dubai is equipped to handle rainfall for the next century.
Managed by Dubai Municipality and set to be completed in phases by 2033, the 'Tasreef' project promises to enhance Dubai's drainage network to accommodate over 20 million cubic metres of water daily, making it the largest rainwater collection system in the region. The infrastructure will include advanced tunnel systems capable of managing up to 230 cubic metres of water per second, utilizing state-of-the-art Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) known for their efficiency and precision in excavation across various terrains.

This strategic undertaking builds upon previous drainage initiatives initiated in 2019, covering key areas like Expo Dubai, Al Maktoum International Airport City, and Jebel Ali. Designed to adapt seamlessly to future climate changes, such as increased rainfall, the project integrates advanced technology and safety measures to ensure operational efficiency and worker safety. Moreover, it aims to reduce construction, operation, and maintenance costs by 20% while extending the network's lifespan.
