Trump's Green Card U-Turn Sparks Hope for Indian Graduates in the US

Former US President Donald Trump, currently vying to return to office in the upcoming elections, has introduced a new immigration proposal that has garnered significant attention, particularly among Indian and other foreign students. This proposal marks a notable shift in his stance on immigration, promising that if he is re-elected, foreign students graduating from US colleges will automatically receive Green Cards, granting them permanent residency in the United States.

Trump's announcement highlights his recognition of the potential economic benefits that retaining these graduates could bring to the US. He pointed out that many foreign students, after completing their education in the US, return to their home countries such as India and China, where they often become successful entrepreneurs and business leaders. By offering Green Cards to these graduates, Trump aims to keep this talent within the US, fostering innovation and economic growth domestically.

The context of this announcement is crucial, as it comes in the lead-up to the US presidential elections in November, where immigration is expected to be a key issue. This election is likely to see a rematch between President Joe Biden and Donald Trump, with both candidates presenting contrasting views on immigration policies.

Trump's recent comments on the "All-In" podcast, hosted by venture capitalists Chamath Palihapitiya, Jason Calacanis, David Sacks, and David Friedberg, further elaborate on his proposed policy. During the podcast, Trump shared stories of foreign graduates from top US colleges who had to return to their home countries due to visa restrictions. He lamented the loss of such talent, emphasizing that these individuals often go on to establish successful companies abroad, a potential economic boon that the US misses out on.

He proposed that graduates, particularly those with degrees in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields, should be able to stay in the US. Trump asserted, "Anybody graduates from a college, you go in there for two years or four years, if you graduate or you get a doctorate degree from a college, you should be able to stay in this country."

Trump's proposed policy contrasts sharply with the immigration restrictions his administration implemented during his previous term. These restrictions included limitations on green cards and visas, which had sparked significant controversy and debate.

The announcement has caused a stir, especially considering the US has over a million foreign students as of the 2022-23 academic year. With Trump's new proposal, the number of foreign students choosing the US for their higher education could potentially rise, given the added incentive of obtaining permanent residency upon graduation.

This policy shift indicates Trump's strategic pivot towards a more merit-based immigration system, which he has previously supported. By focusing on retaining highly educated and skilled individuals, Trump aims to bolster the US economy and maintain its competitive edge in innovation and technology.

The upcoming election will undoubtedly bring immigration policies to the forefront of the debate, with Trump's proposal potentially swaying the opinions of many voters, particularly those within the academic and business communities who recognize the value of retaining top international talent in the US.
