Tom Cruise pays tribute to Val Kilmer at CinemaCon

Famous actor Tom Cruise gave a sweet message for his friend and Top Gun co-star Val Kilmer, who passed away on Tuesday at the age of 65.

On Thursday, Cruise spoke at a movie event called CinemaCon in Las Vegas. He started by remembering Kilmer and called him a “dear friend.” Cruise said Kilmer was a great actor who really loved movies.

“I can’t say enough how much I liked his acting and how much I respected him as a person,” Cruise said. “I was very happy when he joined Top Gun, and later came back again for Top Gun: Maverick.”

He added, “Val loved making movies, and he gave us many great roles to enjoy.”

In the first Top Gun movie from 1986, Kilmer played a pilot named Tom "Iceman" Kazansky, who was a strong rival to Cruise’s character, Pete "Maverick" Mitchell. Years later, Kilmer returned in Top Gun: Maverick (2022), even though he had a hard time talking because of a serious illness — throat cancer.

During the event, Cruise asked everyone to stop for a moment and stay silent to remember Kilmer.

“Thank you for doing that,” Cruise said. “I know Val would be happy about it.”

Tom Cruise was at the event to talk about his next big movie, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, which will be out in May.
