Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is now using a new and smart technology called LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) to check the condition of roads and other road-related assets. This move helps the RTA get more accurate information and supports the use of digital twin platforms—virtual models that help monitor and manage real-life systems. The main goal is to plan better maintenance and keep roads safe and strong for the future.
Hussain Al Banna, the CEO of the Traffic and Roads Agency at RTA, said that LiDAR works much faster and better than older methods. It can do the job up to three times faster than traditional visual checks. He said this shows how serious RTA is about using new technology to improve Dubai’s roads and make the city smarter and more sustainable.

He also shared that LiDAR gives very accurate results—up to 95% accuracy—when checking the condition of roads, lighting poles, traffic signs, and signals. This makes it easier for the RTA to make better and faster decisions about when and where repairs are needed. LiDAR also makes it safer for workers because it reduces the need for risky manual inspections.
With this new system, the RTA can now check up to 80 kilometers of roads every day. Before this, traditional methods could only cover about 3 kilometers a day. That’s a huge 96% improvement. The best part is that these checks can be done while the vehicle is moving at speeds between 30 and 100 km/h—without stopping or slowing down traffic. The LiDAR system can scan up to 80 meters around the vehicle, so it captures a lot of important details.
In the end, Al Banna said that using LiDAR gives very detailed and correct information about the condition of road assets. This helps in planning regular and future repairs more accurately and ensures that the roads stay safe, strong, and well-maintained for a long time. It also helps the RTA decide which repairs should be done first, based on how important and urgent they are. This new system is another step towards making Dubai’s roads more reliable and safe for everyone.
