The Dubai Metro Blue Line project, set to begin operations on September 9, 2029, has been awarded a Dh20.5-billion contract to three prominent Turkish and Chinese companies: Maps, Limak, and CRRC. This highly anticipated addition to the Dubai Metro system will mark a significant milestone in the city’s transport development.
The number nine holds special significance in the history of the Dubai Metro, as the opening of the Blue Line on 9-9-2029 will evoke nostalgia. It is a tribute to the original launch of the Dubai Metro on September 9, 2009, at exactly 9:09:09 PM. This symbolic date aligns with the 20th anniversary of the Dubai Metro, reflecting the city’s ongoing commitment to expanding its world-class transportation network.
The Blue Line project will span 30 kilometers and include 14 stations, with 28 trains in its network. It is expected to serve 200,000 riders by 2030, with projections rising to 320,000 passengers by 2040. The line will accommodate 46,000 passengers per hour in both directions, alleviating traffic congestion on the routes it serves by an estimated 20 percent.

The Blue Line will offer enhanced connectivity between key areas of Dubai, including Dubai International Airport, Mirdif, Al Warqa, International City 1 and 2, Dubai Silicon Oasis, Academic City, Ras Al Khor Industrial Area, Dubai Creek Harbour, and Dubai Festival City. Travel times between stations will range from 10 to 25 minutes, offering a faster and more convenient option for commuters.
This new line is a part of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, which envisions creating a '20-minute city'—a transit-oriented development that ensures residents can access 80 percent of essential services within a 20-minute journey.
The Blue Line will feature a modern and sleek design for its stations, setting it apart from the fully enclosed stations on the Red and Green Lines. The new metro stations will have a futuristic appearance, with smooth, curved structures. The main platform will be covered by a large, oval-shaped design that arches over the tracks, and the side structures housing exits will feature a modern, symmetrical aesthetic with elegant curved details.
This development is poised to enhance the city’s transportation network, reduce congestion, and improve the overall commuting experience for Dubai residents and visitors alike.
