Taiwan has escalated its travel advisory for China, urging citizens to avoid unnecessary travel following Beijing's recent threat to execute Taiwan independence supporters. This heightened warning, announced by Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council spokesperson Liang Wen-chieh, extends to include Hong Kong and Macau, both under Chinese administration.
The move comes in response to China's toughened stance against Taiwan under President Lai Ching-te, whom Beijing labels a separatist. Last week, China introduced new legal guidelines threatening execution for individuals advocating Taiwan independence, sparking international condemnation.
Liang emphasized the serious risks these guidelines pose to Taiwanese travelers in China, alongside broader national security measures implemented by Beijing. While not a travel ban, the advisory aims to safeguard Taiwanese citizens amid escalating tensions.

China's Taiwan Affairs Office has not responded directly to queries regarding the execution threats or Taiwan's travel warning. However, it defended the guidelines as targeting a small group of "diehard" independence advocates, denying broader implications for cross-strait relations.
Regarding extradition concerns for Taiwanese abroad accused of separatism, Liang clarified that Taiwan considers separatism a political rather than criminal offense, suggesting limited international cooperation with China on such matters.
President Lai, who advocates Taiwan's sovereignty and has sought dialogue with Beijing, has faced consistent rejection from China, which asserts Taiwan as its territory subject to reunification. Lai insists on Taiwan's right to self-determination, emphasizing that the island's future must be decided by its people.
The escalating tensions underscore longstanding cross-strait friction, with Taiwan increasingly wary of China's assertive policies and Beijing's efforts to undermine Taiwan's international standing.
