Taiwan Alerts Renewed Chinese Activity Post-Blinken Visit

Taiwan reported increased Chinese military presence near the island, with 12 aircraft breaching the sensitive median line of the Taiwan Strait. This occurred a day after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken concluded his visit to China.

Despite the absence of formal diplomatic ties, the United States remains Taiwan's key supporter and arms supplier. Blinken emphasized the imperative of maintaining peace and stability across the strait during his discussions in China.

Taiwan, a democracy, faces mounting military pressure from China, which claims the island as its territory. However, Taiwan's government refutes these assertions.

Taiwan's defense ministry detected 22 Chinese military aircraft, including Su-30 fighters, with 12 crossing the median line toward Taiwan's north and center on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. local time.

The median line, once respected as an unofficial border, is now routinely crossed by China's air force, which denies its existence.

Taiwan's defense ministry stated that the Chinese aircraft were engaged in "joint combat readiness patrols" with Chinese warships. Taiwanese forces responded appropriately, though details were not disclosed.

China's defense ministry did not respond to calls for comment.

While Taiwan's armed forces are well-prepared, they are outnumbered by China's military, particularly in naval and aerial capabilities. China frequently conducts missions near Taiwan's airspace and waters.

Beijing considers Taiwan a core issue in its relations with the US and urges Washington to cease arms sales to Taiwan.

Taiwan's President-elect Lai Ching-te, set to assume office on May 20, is viewed by Beijing as a separatist. Lai has called for dialogue with China, emphasizing that Taiwan's future should be determined by its people, a stance also held by outgoing President Tsai Ing-wen.
