Sunil Gavaskar Dismisses Concerns Over Rohit Sharma's Weakness Highlighted in TV Broadcast

India cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has criticized broadcaster Star Sports for highlighting Rohit Sharma's perceived weakness against left-arm seamers during India's Super 8 match against Australia in the 2024 T20 World Cup. Despite Rohit's blistering innings of 92 runs off just 41 balls, which included smashing left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc for 29 runs in an over, Rohit eventually fell victim to Starc's bowling.

Following Rohit's dismissal, Star Sports displayed a graphic detailing Rohit's history of dismissals against left-arm pacers. This action did not sit well with Gavaskar, who expressed his frustration during the commentary. "Thinking about Rohit Sharma once again, he got out to a left-hander (left-arm seamer). So before the next match, are we going to do another segment about his weakness to left-handers?" questioned Gavaskar, highlighting what he perceived as unnecessary scrutiny.

Aaron Finch, also in the commentary box, provided perspective, acknowledging the challenge posed by left-arm pacers like Starc, Trent Boult (New Zealand), and Shaheen Shah Afridi (Pakistan) in modern cricket. "There are more left-armers playing now, and they are genuine swing bowlers. So that poses a challenge to the opening batter," explained Finch, attempting to justify the broadcaster's graphic.

However, Gavaskar dismissed the notion that Rohit's dismissal to left-arm pace was a significant issue. "I don't think you should be looking much into that. If you're playing attacking shots when the ball is swinging in, you will be out LBW, you will be out bowled," asserted Gavaskar, drawing on his vast experience in the game, having been the first cricketer to reach 10,000 Test runs.

The incident has sparked debate, with Gavaskar receiving criticism on social media for what some perceive as biased commentary. Critics pointed out instances where Gavaskar appeared critical of Virat Kohli's shot selection in previous matches while praising Rohit's aggressive approach. This contrast has led to accusations of creating divisions among fans and players.
