Sharjah is preparing to build a major space research center, the Al Qasimi Optical Radio Observatory, on Jebel Al-Kitab. This exciting project was reviewed by His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah, during his visit to the Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences, and Technology on Thursday afternoon.

A Vision for the Future

During the visit, officials presented their vision for the observatory. The goal is to make it a leading scientific center and a symbol of innovation for the UAE. The project aims to train local talent, work with international experts, and contribute to space research in line with the country’s space ambitions.

A First-of-Its-Kind Observatory in the Region

The Al Qasimi Observatory will be the first officially licensed observatory in the UAE for space research. It will track and monitor space activities while providing data on objects in space. This observatory will house the largest optical telescope in the Arabian Gulf, making it the most advanced in the Arab world.

It will have three main observation stations to study:

  • Stars and planets outside our solar system

  • How stars are formed

  • Galaxies and their structure

The observatory will also encourage public participation by offering educational workshops and hands-on training for students and researchers. One of its main focuses will be studying the southern sky, which has not been explored much in the region.

The project follows the University of Sharjah’s EDGE strategy, which focuses on technology development, global partnerships, and entrepreneurship.

Sharjah’s Satellite Lab and Space Research

During his visit, His Highness also learned about the Sharjah CubeSat Laboratory, which is working on small satellites called CubeSats. The lab aims to build national expertise in space technology and train young researchers.

The lab has already worked on Sharjah-Sat 1 and Sharjah-Sat 2 and is involved in publishing research, conducting training programs, and setting up ground stations. The lab has big plans for the future, with projects planned until 2031 to expand research and space missions.

Meteorite Research and UAE’s Meteor Network

His Highness also visited the Meteorite Laboratory, which runs the UAE Meteor Monitoring Network. This lab studies meteorites, their impact on Earth, and space rocks that enter our atmosphere.

Currently, the laboratory has a collection of 8,111 meteorite samples and provides research opportunities for students. It also hosts visitors and delegations interested in space science.

Some upcoming projects in the Meteorite Laboratory include:

  • Creating a law for meteorite collection in the UAE

  • Expanding the UAE Meteor Monitoring Network

  • Studying and analyzing meteorites found in the region

  • Improving ways to display and preserve meteorites

  • Upgrading meteorite study equipment

  • Partnering with other research centers

Sharjah Planetarium’s New Projects

The visit ended with a presentation about the Sharjah Planetarium and its latest work. The planetarium has created new live space shows using advanced technology. These shows explain the Northern Lights, cosmic clouds, the International Space Station, violent space events, the Moon, and the Islamic lunar calendar.

The planetarium also takes part in local and international events and is working on new projects to make astronomy more exciting and accessible to the public.

This visit showed Sharjah’s strong commitment to space research, education, and innovation, making it a key player in the region’s space exploration efforts.
