The Abu Dhabi City Municipality, through its Municipal Services Sector – Environment, Health, and Safety Department, took part in Earth Hour on Saturday evening, March 22. During this event, they turned off the lights in all their buildings from 8:30 to 9:30 pm. This initiative was done to raise awareness about the importance of saving energy and protecting the environment.
The municipality encouraged everyone in the community to switch off unnecessary lights during Earth Hour to help conserve electricity and raise awareness about the dangers of climate change. By doing so, they wanted to show their support for protecting the environment.
What is Earth Hour?
Earth Hour is an annual event organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). It encourages people around the world to turn off lights and electronic devices that are not needed for one hour. The goal is to highlight the importance of saving energy and taking care of the planet. Earth Hour is celebrated by individuals, communities, businesses, and organizations worldwide.

The purpose of Earth Hour is to encourage everyone to use energy and water responsibly, reduce pollution, and promote recycling. WWF also suggests other ways people, schools, universities, and companies can participate, such as turning off unnecessary lights, spreading awareness about climate change, and adopting sustainable practices.
In addition, WWF asks businesses and organizations to educate their employees about climate change and encourage them to adopt energy-saving practices at work.
Why Earth Hour is Important
As climate change continues to create problems for the planet, such as rising temperatures and the destruction of natural resources, it is more important than ever to raise awareness about environmental protection. Earth Hour has become one of the largest environmental movements in the world, bringing people together to face these serious issues.
When people switch off their lights for one hour, they show that energy conservation and protecting the environment are important. What started as a simple action has now turned into a global movement, with millions of people, businesses, and communities taking part in the effort to create a more sustainable future.
Message from the UN Secretary-General
António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, shared a message about Earth Hour:
"Earth Hour is a global movement where millions of people turn off their lights to show how serious the state of our planet is. This year, I urge you to join them. The situation is urgent because our climate is changing rapidly. Last year was the hottest year on record.
Earth Hour is also a chance to show global unity and promise to choose a better path – one that leads to a more sustainable future. It reminds us that everyone has the power to fight for the planet’s future.
So, mark your calendars for March 22 at 8:30 pm local time. Let’s turn off the lights together and work toward a brighter future for everyone."
Earth Hour’s Achievements
Earth Hour has already achieved some amazing things worldwide. Some of its key successes include:
Creating the first "Earth Hour Forest" in Uganda.
Mobilizing more than 250,000 people in Russia to protect forests and marine life.
Supporting new laws that help protect 3.4 million hectares of marine areas in Argentina.
Distributing thousands of energy-efficient stoves in Madagascar.
Installing solar-powered lights in villages in India that have no electricity.
Helping extend a ban on logging in Paraguay to reduce deforestation.
Starting educational programs about environmental protection in Thailand and Taiwan.
Installing hundreds of thousands of LED light bulbs in the United States with the help of Girl Scouts.
Through these actions, Earth Hour has already made a big difference, and it continues to inspire people around the world to take steps toward a more sustainable future.
