Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of Italy's Brothers of Italy party addressed party leaders on Tuesday, urging them to purge anyone who venerates Italy’s fascist history from their ranks. Her directive followed an undercover media investigation that recently unveiled a video depicting members of the party’s youth wing performing fascist salutes and chanting “Sieg Heil.”

In a letter to party leaders, Meloni expressed deep concern and disappointment over the actions captured in the video, emphasizing the damage caused to the party's reputation. She unequivocally condemned racism, antisemitism, and any form of nostalgia for totalitarian regimes of the 20th century within Brothers of Italy.

“There is no place in Brothers of Italy for racism or antisemitism, nor for those who romanticize the totalitarian regimes of the past or engage in misguided folklore,” Meloni wrote. She underscored the party's overarching mission and warned against allowing individuals who misunderstand its principles to undermine its objectives.

Brothers of Italy traces its origins to a post-World War II neo-fascist group, but Meloni has sought to reposition the party as mainstream conservative, distancing it from far-right associations. However, opposition parties seized on the undercover investigation by Fanpage, an online newspaper, portraying it as evidence that Brothers of Italy harbors extreme right-wing elements contrary to Meloni’s public image efforts.

Responding to the allegations, Meloni criticized the undercover methods used by Fanpage but acknowledged the need for transparency and consistency within her party. She emphasized that any disparity between public image and private behavior among party members would not be tolerated.

“Anyone who believes in projecting a false public image of Brothers of Italy that contradicts our true values is not welcome among us,” Meloni asserted.

Fanpage’s investigation included footage of youth members chanting “Duce,” a term referring to Italy’s fascist leader Benito Mussolini, and revealed offensive statements against Jewish people in group chats. Following the expose, two youth members resigned from their positions.

Meloni’s efforts to address and distance her party from these revelations reflect ongoing challenges in managing the ideological spectrum within Brothers of Italy, amid broader political scrutiny and public perception concerns.
