Russia ratifies military pact with North Korea as 3,000 troops are sent to support

Russian lawmakers ratified a significant military pact with North Korea on Thursday, solidifying a strategic partnership at a time when international tensions are on the rise. This treaty, signed in June during President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Pyongyang, calls for immediate military assistance between the two nations if either is attacked. The pact underscores the strongest military cooperation between Russia and North Korea since the Cold War era.

The Russian State Duma, the lower house of parliament, approved the agreement swiftly, and the upper house is expected to follow soon. This comes as 3,000 North Korean troops have reportedly been deployed to Russia and are training at various locations. U.S. officials expressed concern that these troops could be involved in the Ukraine conflict, warning that they could be targeted if they engage in combat alongside Russian forces.

This troop deployment is seen as an escalation of military cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang. Both countries have denied supplying each other with weapons or ammunition for use in the Ukraine war, despite U.S. and allied assertions to the contrary.

When questioned in June about the possibility of North Korean troops fighting alongside Russian forces in Ukraine, Putin downplayed the likelihood but did not rule out providing weapons to Pyongyang. Analysts suggest that in return for military support, Moscow might offer North Korea advanced weapons technology, potentially aiding its missile and satellite development programs, which remain a global concern.

The ratification of this agreement strengthens the military alliance between Russia and North Korea, raising concerns in the West about the growing ties between the two nations as both face increasing international isolation.
