His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), and His Excellency Lieutenant General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police, recently convened to discuss the progress and future goals of Dubai's Traffic Safety Strategy. This meeting underscored their joint commitment to reducing traffic fatalities and enhancing the safety of public transport.
Strengthening Partnerships for Safer Roads
During the meeting, Al Tayer lauded the robust partnership between the RTA and Dubai Police, emphasizing its pivotal role in advancing Dubai's traffic safety goals. He highlighted the significant strides made in reducing traffic-related deaths, which have dropped by 93% from 2007 to 2023. This achievement aligns with the RTA’s "Zero Fatalities" vision, aiming to position Dubai as a global leader in traffic safety. Al Tayer also reiterated the RTA’s dedication to improving the safety of all mobility forms and enhancing traffic awareness across the city.
Enhanced Traffic Safety Systems
Lieutenant General Al Marri echoed Al Tayer's sentiments, praising the collaboration's success in establishing joint systems and achieving notable milestones in road safety and security. He noted that the strategic partnership has been instrumental in reducing traffic accident fatalities, thanks to continuous coordination and awareness campaigns targeting various traffic issues. These efforts have solidified Dubai’s reputation as a safe and thriving metropolis.
Progress of the Dubai Traffic Safety Strategy
The discussion also focused on the implementation of the Dubai Traffic Safety Strategy 2022-2026. This comprehensive plan is structured around four key pillars: Enforcement, Roads and Vehicles Engineering, Traffic Awareness, and Systems & Management. The joint efforts of RTA and Dubai Police have led to the achievement of all annual targets for 2023, with the fatality rate dropping to 1.6 deaths per 100,000 people, surpassing the target of 2.0 deaths.
Key Initiatives and Achievements
Over the past year, several strategic initiatives were launched, including stringent enforcement against serious traffic violations, construction of 32 raised pedestrian crossings, and improvements at over 200 locations for individual mobility users. Additionally, 29 sites with recurring incidents were addressed, and a smart management project for public transport drivers was implemented. Joint traffic awareness and enforcement campaigns were conducted, along with specific initiatives for delivery motorcycle drivers.
Focus on the Blue Line Project
The meeting also addressed Dubai Police's requirements for the Blue Line project of the Dubai Metro. This 30 km line, including a 15 km underground route, will feature 14 stations, connecting with the Red Line at Centrepoint Station and the Green Line at Al Khor Station. The Blue Line is set to serve nine vital areas, projected to house one million residents by 2040, and provide a direct link to Dubai International Airport. With an expected daily ridership of 200,000 passengers, increasing to 320,000 by 2040, the Blue Line is poised to significantly reduce traffic congestion and boost the emirate's development and economy.
Notable Attendees
The meeting saw the presence of key officials from both RTA and Dubai Police. From Dubai Police, attendees included Major General Abdullah Ali Al Ghaithi, Assistant Commander-in-Chief for Operations Affairs, Major General Ahmed Thani bin Ghulaita Al Muhairi, Director of the General Department of Forensic Evidence and Criminology, and Major General Tariq Tehlak, Acting Director of the General Department of Traffic. Representing RTA were Abdullah Yousef Al Ali, CEO of Licensing Agency, Mohammed Yousef Al Mudharreb, CEO of Corporate Technology Support Services Sector, Hussain Al Banna, CEO of Traffic and Roads Agency, and Moaza Saeed Al Marri, Executive Director of the Office of the Director General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors.
