Rohingya Refugees Flee to Bangladesh as Violence Escalates in Myanmar, Sparking Crisis

Photo : Reuters

Escalating violence in Myanmar's Rakhine state has reportedly driven Rohingya refugees to seek safety in Bangladesh, despite Dhaka's stance against accepting more refugees from Myanmar. Mohammed Mizanur Rahman, Bangladesh's official responsible for refugee relief, acknowledged reports of Rohingya crossing into Bangladesh, adding to the nearly one million already sheltered in Cox's Bazar refugee camps.

"Fighting in Rakhine has intensified since the breakdown of a ceasefire between the Arakan Army (AA) and Myanmar's junta last year," Rahman stated, noting that the AA's recent territorial gains have exacerbated the conflict. The AA, a prominent ethnic armed group, has captured key towns in Rakhine, including Buthidaung, where Rohingya reside. Allegations of AA targeting Rohingya during its offensive have surfaced, although the group denies these claims.

Amid the escalating conflict, the AA has urged Maungdaw residents, predominantly Rohingya, to evacuate ahead of anticipated military operations. However, with escape routes blocked, tens of thousands of Rohingya face a dire situation, trapped in the conflict zone. Rahman expressed concern over potential further displacement in Maungdaw, with Rohingya appealing for protection and assistance from international organizations like the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).

While calls for help increase, Bangladesh's official policy remains unchanged regarding Rohingya refugees. The country's foreign ministry, however, has yet to comment on the latest developments. Meanwhile, reports from Maungdaw reveal residents moving to safer locations amid fears of airstrikes and artillery attacks as the conflict intensifies.

The situation underscores ongoing humanitarian challenges and the plight of Rohingya Muslims, who have faced persecution and violence in Myanmar for years, prompting repeated waves of mass displacement across the border into Bangladesh.
