Ahead of COP29 in Azerbaijan, a significant gathering is scheduled in Abu Dhabi to explore the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in combating climate change. Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, the President of COP28, emphasized the upcoming event's focus on addressing the dual nature of AI—its potential to reduce emissions alongside its substantial energy requirements.
Scheduled for November in the UAE capital, this meeting will convene leaders from business, government, finance, and civil society to delve into practical applications of AI in climate action. The event, coined as the "change makers majlis," follows closely on the heels of COP28's landmark UAE Consensus, which saw nearly 200 nations commit to transitioning away from fossil fuels and expanding clean energy solutions.

Dr. Al Jaber underscored the inclusive nature of the UAE Consensus, which involved all industries and welcomed diverse solutions. Looking ahead, he stressed the critical role of AI, projected to contribute $7 trillion to global GDP over the next decade, in accelerating the energy transition.
In his commentary on Project Syndicate, Dr. Al Jaber highlighted AI's transformative potential across industries, including enhancing industrial processes, optimizing transport systems, improving energy efficiency, and minimizing emissions. However, he cautioned against AI's increasing energy consumption, noting a projected 160% rise in data center power demand by 2030.
Addressing this challenge requires innovative collaborations between technology and energy sectors to manage AI's energy demands effectively. Dr. Al Jaber announced plans for the Abu Dhabi majlis to foster discussions on integrating AI into sustainable energy solutions.
He cited examples of AI-driven advancements, such as Adnoc's use of predictive maintenance to reduce emissions and AI's impact on agriculture, where it has boosted yields and reduced water usage significantly. Collaborations like Microsoft and Brookfield's renewable energy development and Masdar's ambitious renewable energy targets were also highlighted as crucial steps forward.
Dr. Al Jaber emphasized the need for substantial investments in global grid infrastructure and sustainable energy sources to support AI's growth while minimizing environmental impact. He underscored the UAE's commitment to sustainable development and its emerging leadership in AI, positioning the majlis as a pivotal platform to unite stakeholders and drive actionable solutions.
The goal, as articulated by Dr. Al Jaber, is to bridge the gap between AI innovation and sustainable energy practices, leveraging this convergence to realize the goals set forth in the UAE Consensus and capitalize on economic opportunities for global progress.
