As temperatures soared in southern Pakistan, the death toll rose sharply. The Edhi ambulance service reported an unprecedented influx of bodies to Karachi's city morgue, averaging 30 to 40 daily, but spiking to 568 over the past six days, including 141 on Tuesday alone. The exact causes of death are still being determined, coinciding with temperatures exceeding 40°C (104°F), with humidity making it feel as hot as 49°C (120°F), exacerbating conditions.
Civil Hospital Karachi admitted 267 patients suffering from heatstroke between Sunday and Wednesday, with 12 fatalities. Dr. Imran Sarwar Sheikh noted that most patients were elderly, some as young as their twenties, presenting symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, and high fever. Recommendations included staying hydrated and wearing light clothing.

Designated heatwave centers and relief camps were established, but challenges persisted. Karachi residents, including children seeking relief in fountains, struggled with extreme heat. Mohammad Imran, drenched in sweat, described the intensity to Reuters, highlighting the ordeal faced by many.
The situation worsened for some, like 56-year-old security guard Wasim Ahmed, who collapsed from suspected heat-induced stress shortly after returning home. Power outages compounded the crisis, leaving many without essential cooling, a situation echoed by Muhammad Amin's family, who suspect heat as a factor in his sudden death amidst frequent electricity cuts.
Karachi's struggles are mirrored across Pakistan. Last month, Sindh province recorded a near-record temperature of 52.2°C (126°F). Meanwhile, India's Delhi faced a similarly severe heatwave, underscoring regional climate challenges exacerbated by global warming.
Residents, like Mohammad Zeshan, blamed climate change for the escalating crisis, urging government action. Meteorologists predict the heatwave will persist, with relief anticipated only with the onset of the monsoon, expected early with forecasts of significantly increased rainfall.
The unfolding crisis underscores the urgent need for climate adaptation strategies and heightened public health preparedness in the face of increasingly frequent and intense heatwaves globally.
