The Islamabad district and sessions court has rejected the pleas of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, to suspend their seven-year sentences in the Iddat Case, as reported by Dawn on Thursday. The verdict, previously reserved on Tuesday, was announced today by Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADSJ) Afzal Majoka.
The decision sparked strong condemnation from lawyers, women activists, and civil society members who criticized it as infringing on women's rights to dignity and privacy. Protests erupted in Islamabad, with demonstrators in Karachi also expressing dissent against what they perceived as undue state interference in personal matters.

In February, ahead of the general elections, an Islamabad court sentenced Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi to seven years in prison and fined them each PKR 500,000 for marrying during Bushra Bibi's Iddat period, a waiting period after divorce or widowhood during which a woman cannot remarry.
Recently, Imran Khan and his Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi were acquitted in the Cypher case, while their penalties in the Toshakhana case were suspended in April.
Previously, the case was being heard by District and Sessions Judge Shahrukh Arjumand, who reserved the verdict in May but later requested the transfer of the case due to personal reasons. ADSJ Afzal Majoka subsequently took over the case.
Meanwhile, Bushra Bibi's lawyer had filed a petition in the Islamabad High Court seeking her release on bail and suspension of the sentence. The High Court instructed the sessions court to decide on Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi's pleas within ten days.
The legal proceedings have drawn significant attention in Pakistan, highlighting issues of judicial independence, privacy rights, and the broader political implications for Imran Khan, who remains a prominent figure in Pakistani politics despite recent legal challenges.
