One Dead as Roof Collapse Crushes Cars at Delhi Airport

A tragic incident unfolded at Delhi airport as a roof collapsed following heavy rain, claiming the life of one person and injuring four others. Videos circulating online depict massive roof pillars crashing down on cars parked at Terminal 1. In response, all flights from the terminal were immediately suspended, and check-in counters were shut down.

The collapse occurred around 05:00 local time, with rescue efforts swiftly initiated and the injured transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. The Civil Aviation Authority of India advised airlines to rebook passengers on alternate flights or provide refunds, affecting thousands of travelers as Terminal 1 primarily handles domestic flights. Some airlines diverted operations to the airport's remaining two terminals.

Federal Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu announced compensation of 2 million rupees ($24,000) for the deceased's family and 300,000 rupees for each injured person. He assured the public that the situation was under control and that inspections were ongoing to prevent further incidents, including checks on similar structures nationwide.

Social media criticism surfaced, questioning the collapse despite recent renovations costing billions of rupees, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March. Minister Kinjarapu clarified that the collapsed section was not part of the renovated area but an older section dating back to 2009.

Delhi has experienced heavy rains since Thursday, offering relief from scorching temperatures prevalent since April but causing chaos with waterlogged roads and major traffic jams. Commuters reported lengthy delays and vehicle breakdowns, exacerbated by videos showing flooded streets and submerged vehicles in underpasses. Flight operations were also disrupted, with the meteorological department forecasting continued heavy rainfall over the weekend.
