Frustrated by the missed flight, she ended the relationship and sought compensation through the tribunal, arguing that her ex-partner's commitments constituted a verbal contract.
According to tribunal documents released last week, the woman claimed damages not only for missing her flight but also for kennel costs incurred because her ex-boyfriend allegedly failed to care for her dogs as agreed. Additionally, she sought reimbursement for expenses related to alternative transportation to the airport and a ferry ticket she had purchased for her ex-partner.

However, the tribunal dismissed her claim during the hearing in March. Legal experts, including Associate Professor Simon Connell from Otago University's law faculty, weighed in on the case. Connell noted that for the woman's claim to succeed, she would have needed to demonstrate a legally binding contract, which was lacking in this instance.
Connell highlighted the unusual nature of attempting to enforce what many might view as a social agreement through legal means, suggesting such cases can attract significant attention. He referenced a similar incident in 2015 in Britain, where parents were threatened with legal action over their child's absence from a birthday party.
In conclusion, while the woman believed she had a valid legal claim based on verbal agreements with her ex-boyfriend, the tribunal's decision underscored the challenges of proving such agreements in a legal context without clear evidence of a binding contract.
