Kathmandu, Nepal: Tragedy struck the Himalayan mountaineering community as Nepali guide Lakpa Tenji Sherpa, aged 53, succumbed after successfully summiting Mount Makalu, the world's fifth-highest mountain. The news emerged on Thursday, marking the first fatality of the spring climbing season.
Sherpa, renowned for his expertise and experience, reached the summit of the formidable 8,485-meter-tall (27,838-feet) Mount Makalu on Monday, accompanying foreign climbers. However, the joy of conquest quickly turned to sorrow as he encountered complications during the descent, ultimately leading to his untimely demise.
According to Rakesh Gurung from Nepal's tourism department, Sherpa's health deteriorated during the descent, necessitating assistance from his team members. The precise details surrounding his passing remain awaited, as expedition organizer Seven Summit Treks awaits further information.

Mount Makalu has been a focal point of climbing endeavors this season, with Nepal granting 59 permits to foreign climbers. Last month, a rope-fixing team successfully summited the peak, facilitating subsequent ascents.
Tragically, Sherpa's demise serves as a grim reminder of the risks inherent in Himalayan expeditions. Nepali guides and porters, indispensable figures in these ventures, often bear the brunt of perilous conditions, emphasizing the sacrifices made in pursuit of climbers' aspirations to conquer the world's highest peaks.
Nepal, renowned as the ultimate destination for mountaineers with eight of the world's 14 highest peaks within its borders, is currently witnessing a surge in climbing activity. As the spring climbing season unfolds, characterized by warmer temperatures and calmer winds, hundreds of climbers from around the globe flock to Nepal, eager to test their mettle against the majestic Himalayas.
This year, Nepal has issued over 900 permits for mountain expeditions, including 414 for the iconic Mount Everest alone, generating significant revenue through royalties. Despite the allure of adventure and conquest, Sherpa's tragic passing serves as a poignant reminder of the inherent dangers lurking amidst the breathtaking beauty of the world's tallest peaks.
