Renowned NASA filmmaker Simon Holland has made headlines with his bold claim that Earth-based telescopes have detected signs of intelligent extraterrestrial life, with an announcement potentially coming next month. Holland, known for his collaborations with NASA-funded projects, stated that a program supported by Oxford University, which focuses on searching for extraterrestrial signals, has made a significant discovery.

Holland indicated that insiders from Mark Zuckerberg’s Breakthrough Listen project had informed him of this groundbreaking finding. He suggested that the forthcoming evidence could be unveiled within a month, possibly coinciding with the U.S. presidential election. He mentioned that this evidence may relate to alien signals intercepted by the Parkes telescope in Australia, a key instrument operated by the Oxford-backed initiative.
“They found evidence of a non-human technological signature a few years ago using the Parkes telescope in Australia,” Holland asserted, stirring interest and excitement within the scientific community and beyond.
The claims have prompted a surge of activity among astronomers, who are now working diligently to gather supporting evidence for this extraordinary assertion. However, Holland also expressed concern about a potential race against time, noting that researchers in China might be preparing to preempt the announcement.
Holland pointed out that the Chinese might be poised to release findings from their FAST [Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope] program. It’s the largest telescope in the world since Arecibo, and Holland believes they could be attempting to beat the Breakthrough Listen team to the announcement.
He elaborated that Chinese researchers are racing to publish their findings on BLC-1, or Breakthrough Listen Candidate 1, a promising signal detected by the Parkes telescope back in April 2019. BLC-1, which originates from Proxima Centauri, located 4.2 light-years away from Earth, is significant due to its distinct characteristics: it emanates from a single point source, has a narrow band electromagnetic frequency of 982 MHz, and displays a Doppler shift that suggests the presence of a rotating planet.
The filmmaker believes the signal is unlikely to stem from human interference, as its attributes do not align with known natural phenomena. Breakthrough Listen has committed $100 million in telescope time to explore five potential candidates, including BLC-1.
Dr. Andrew Siemion, a prominent figure in Berkeley's Breakthrough Listen Science Program, confirmed that researchers are still in the process of analyzing BLC-1. If they can gather sufficient data that confirms the signal's technological origins, they plan to publish their findings. However, there are concerns that Chinese researchers might already be aware of BLC-1’s coordinates and could rush to announce their results first.
While the news is generating excitement, it’s crucial to emphasize that, as of now, there is no conclusive evidence of extraterrestrial life. Astrobiologists have been investigating the potential for life beyond Earth by studying extreme environments and chemically hostile ecosystems that could support life. The search for extraterrestrial life has been ongoing since the mid-20th century, employing various methods such as telescope data analysis and radio communications to identify signs of life.
