Ten years after the Paris Agreement, nearly 200 countries are facing a critical deadline to update their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), outlining their strategies to combat climate change by reducing emissions globally.
A coalition called Mission 2025, comprising major corporations, financial institutions, cities, and regions, is urging governments to enhance their climate ambitions ahead of the February 2025 deadline to submit emission reduction plans to the United Nations. Groundswell, facilitated by non-profits Global Optimism, Systems Change Lab, and the Bezos Earth Fund, coordinates this effort.
Leading companies like Unilever, IKEA, and Octopus EV have joined Mission 2025, along with participants from the We Mean Business Coalition. This initiative aims to demonstrate robust support for ambitious climate action and is spearheaded by Christiana Figueres of Global Optimism, who played a pivotal role in shaping the Paris Agreement.

The coalition highlights that over two-thirds of the world's largest companies, representing $31 trillion in annual revenue, are now aligned with efforts to achieve net-zero emissions. This alignment underscores a global shift towards sustainable practices, as indicated by data from the Energy & Climate Intelligence Unit.
Despite corporate backing, a UN survey across 77 countries revealed that 80% of respondents believe their governments should take stronger actions on climate change. This sentiment contrasts with perceived government hesitancy, driven by concerns over re-election and economic impacts.
Figueres criticized this lack of political leadership and policy clarity, attributing it to entrenched interests in the fossil fuel sector. She emphasized that cleaner technologies are proving to be economically viable and should be prioritized in national climate policies.
Looking ahead, Figueres stressed the importance of governments providing clearer policy frameworks to inspire confidence and investment in the transition to a low-carbon economy by 2035. The Mission 2025 coalition plans to support this effort by providing essential data and insights, focusing particularly on the world's largest economies responsible for the majority of global emissions.
At a recent climate conference in Bonn, UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell emphasized the need for comprehensive NDCs covering all sectors and greenhouse gases. He echoed the coalition's call for ambitious actions from governments to drive meaningful climate progress globally.
