He said, "The world has survived the coronavirus, but now there are new problems causing divisions between people." He believes that it is important for people from all over the world to come together, talk, and learn about new technology, ideas, and cultures. The Expo will officially open on Sunday and is about the theme "Designing Future Society for Our Lives."
Even though the Expo is meant to bring people together, there are still some worries. One of the reasons is the recent threats made by former U.S. President Donald Trump about trade taxes. This has made people more nervous. There are also other problems like the war in Ukraine and fighting in the Middle East.
A large wooden structure called the "Grand Ring" is in the middle of the Expo. It is made to look like a ring, which stands for unity and togetherness. Prime Minister Ishiba said that he hopes the world will unite again through the connections made at the Expo. The "Grand Ring" is very big. It is the largest wooden structure in the world, 20 meters high, and stretches 2 kilometers around the Expo.
The Expo is taking place on Yumeshima Island, which was created by reclaiming land from the ocean. The event will last for six months, and about 180 countries are taking part in it. They will show their ideas for the future in special pavilions with unique designs.
This is Osaka's second time hosting a World Expo. The first one, in 1970, was a huge success and brought in 64 million visitors. However, this time there have been some challenges. Fewer people in Japan are excited about the event, and the cost of building the Expo has increased a lot because the value of Japan’s money, the yen, has gone down. The total cost is now 235 billion yen, which is much more than originally planned. Some people are upset about the use of their tax money for this.
Because of the high cost, some pavilions were not finished in time for the opening. For example, the pavilions for Nepal and India were still being worked on. The war in Ukraine has also caused delays for their pavilion. Russia has decided not to join the Expo this year.
Ticket sales have not been as high as expected. Only 9 million tickets have been sold so far, which is less than half of the target number. However, the organizers still hope that 28 million people will visit before the Expo ends in October.
Emperor Naruhito of Japan also spoke at the opening. He talked about his visit to the first Osaka Expo when he was 10 years old. He remembered being excited to see new technology, like a wireless phone and a moon rock brought back by the Apollo 12 mission. The Emperor hopes that children today will have the same chance to learn about the world and think about the future while visiting the Expo.
