Three people have lost their lives in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district following violent clashes that are reportedly linked to the ongoing protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act.
Among the dead are a father and his son who were brutally attacked inside their home in Jafrabad, which falls under the Samsherganj police station area. The family said that a group of unknown men suddenly surrounded their house early Saturday morning. The attackers stormed into the house with the intention to loot and then violently attacked 60-year-old Hargobinda Das and his 45-year-old son Chandan Das. Both of them received serious injuries and died while being taken to the hospital.

In a separate incident, a young man who had suffered a bullet injury during the unrest also died on Saturday. His identity is yet to be officially confirmed.
As of now, police have arrested 138 people in connection with the violence. Officials said they are continuing to monitor the situation closely.
Tension remains high in several areas including Nimtita, Shamsherganj, Jangipur, Suti, and Jafrabad. To maintain law and order, the Railway Police Force (RPF) and the Border Security Force (BSF) have been deployed in these regions. Officers told the media that while the situation is tense, it is under control for now.
West Bengal's Director General of Police (DGP), Rajeev Kumar, spoke to reporters and said that there had been signs of unrest in Jangipur since Friday. He confirmed that there were incidents of communal disturbance and warned that strict action would be taken against anyone causing trouble. “We will not allow any hooliganism. We are handling the situation seriously. Protecting people is our top priority,” the DGP said.
Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also reacted strongly to the situation. On Saturday, she made it clear that her government is firmly against the Waqf (Amendment) Bill. She said that the law will not be implemented in West Bengal.
In a message shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), CM Banerjee urged people from all religions to stay peaceful and not fall into the trap of those trying to create violence. “Every human life is valuable. Please do not cause riots because of political reasons. Those who are creating violence are damaging society. Let me remind you, this law was not made by us. The central government made it. If you have questions, ask the central government,” she wrote.
She also said that her party, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), has clearly stated its position against the Waqf Amendment Bill, and it will not be enforced in the state.
Police and government authorities have asked people to stay calm and cooperate to maintain peace in the affected areas.
