An Israeli national was discovered fatally shot in the Palestinian town of Qalqilya in the northern West Bank on Saturday morning, as violence escalates in the occupied region, according to Israel's army.
The army confirmed that the man succumbed to his injuries after being shot in Qalqilya, where Israeli troops are currently conducting operations. This announcement came a day after Israeli forces shot and killed two militants in the same town of Qalqilya. Further details surrounding the incident were not immediately disclosed.
Tensions have intensified in the West Bank since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas conflict last October. According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, which tracks casualties, at least 549 Palestinians in the territory have been killed by Israeli gunfire during this period. In response, Palestinians in the West Bank have reportedly killed at least nine Israelis, including five soldiers, based on data from the United Nations.

Israeli nationals are generally prohibited from entering Qalqilya and other areas of the West Bank under the jurisdiction of the Palestinian Authority.
In April, the killing of a 14-year-old Israeli settler triggered a series of retaliatory attacks by settlers on Palestinian towns within the territory. The Israeli army attributed the boy's death to murder and later apprehended a Palestinian suspect linked to the incident.
The abduction and subsequent killing of three Israeli teenagers in the West Bank in 2014 had similarly sparked heightened tensions and culminated in a 50-day conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, marking one of the deadliest confrontations between the two sides at that time.
In recent years, militant groups have gained influence in the northern West Bank as the authority of the Palestinian Authority has waned. The current escalation began on October 7 when Hamas militants launched an assault on southern Israel, resulting in approximately 1,200 casualties and the capture of about 250 individuals.
In response, Israel has conducted airstrikes and military incursions into Gaza, resulting in the deaths of over 3,400 Palestinians, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. It should be noted that this figure includes both combatants and civilians.
Israel seized control of the West Bank, along with the Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem, during the 1967 Middle East war. The Palestinians seek these territories for their envisioned independent state
