Indian Farm Labourer Dies in Italy After Being Abandoned on Roadside with Severed Arm

Satnam Singh, an Indian farm labourer working in Italy, tragically lost his life after a horrific accident on Monday left him with his arm severed by a machine. The incident occurred while he was cutting hay at a farm in Latina, a region south of Rome heavily populated by Indian migrant workers.

Instead of receiving immediate assistance, Singh was reportedly abandoned "like a bag of rubbish near his home," according to statements from the Flai CGIL trade union, which described the situation as akin to a "horror film." This callous act drew widespread condemnation, including from Italian Labour Minister Marina Calderone, who denounced it as a "true act of barbarity" in Parliament.

Local authorities and police responded to calls from Singh's wife and friends, dispatching an air ambulance to transport him to a hospital in Rome. Despite efforts to save him, Singh succumbed to his injuries and passed away on Wednesday.

The Indian Embassy in Italy expressed condolences and confirmed they were working closely with local authorities to assist Singh's family and ensure appropriate consular support. The incident has sparked an investigation, with authorities vowing to hold those responsible for Singh's mistreatment accountable.

Singh, who was reportedly working without legal documentation, was part of a community of Indian labourers known to face challenges including exploitation and precarious working conditions in the region. The Democratic Party condemned the incident as a stark example of the exploitation prevalent in Latina, describing it as a setback for human decency and rights.

As investigations continue, the tragic death of Satnam Singh has underscored broader concerns about the treatment of migrant workers and the need for improved safeguards and protections in agricultural workplaces abroad.
