Google is planning to work with Taiwan’s MediaTek to make its next AI chips, called Tensor Processing Units (TPUs). As per a report by The Information on Monday, these new chips are likely to come out next year. This step shows that Google is changing its chip-making plans, but it will still keep working with Broadcom, the company it has been making AI chips with for many years.

The reason Google wants to join hands with MediaTek is because MediaTek’s chips cost less than Broadcom’s. Also, MediaTek has strong ties with TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company), one of the biggest chip makers in the world. This deal will help Google cut costs and get more affordable chips.
Even with this new partnership, Google will keep making its own AI server chips. These chips are used for Google’s research work and also given to cloud clients. By making its own chips, Google hopes to rely less on Nvidia, which still leads the AI chip market. This is key for Google, as other companies like OpenAI and Meta depend heavily on Nvidia’s chips for their AI work.
Last year, Google introduced its sixth-generation TPU, which competes with Nvidia’s chips. This chip is used by Google itself and also offered to its cloud customers. By using MediaTek, Google hopes to save money and improve its AI tech.
As per the tech research firm Omdia, Google spent between $6 billion and $9 billion on TPUs last year. This estimate is based on Broadcom’s income from AI chips. By switching to MediaTek, Google plans to spend less and earn more in its AI business.
In another move, Google is also talking with Apple to bring Rich Communication Services (RCS) messaging to Indian mobile users this year. RCS is a better form of messaging than SMS. It allows read receipts, typing alerts, and clear media sharing.
Right now, RCS messaging is only available on iPhones, giving Apple the exclusive blue bubble chat. If Apple partners with Google, RCS could also work on Android phones, making it easier for people to chat across devices. This could change the way companies in India send messages to customers.
In India, Apple is expected to team up with Google, which is already working with telecom companies like Vodafone Idea and Reliance Jio. By joining hands, Google and Apple could make RCS the new standard for business messaging in India.
The system link between telecom companies, Google, and Apple will not affect the user experience. RCS messages will still use mobile data or Wi-Fi, just like SMS. However, this deal could impact business messaging, which is widely used by banks, e-commerce sites, and service providers for sending alerts and updates.
By partnering with MediaTek for its AI chips and Apple for RCS messaging, Google is making smart moves. These partnerships will help Google lower costs, improve its AI technology, and expand its services in the mobile messaging market.
