The Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) recently concluded its involvement in the 57th Seminar for Arabian Studies, organized by the International Association for the Study of Arabia (IASA). The event aimed to facilitate the exchange of ideas and perspectives among researchers and academics concerning the history and civilization of the Arabian Peninsula. This participation aligns with Dubai Culture's mission to highlight the significance of Dubai's archaeological and historical sites, supporting its goal of securing the emirate's place on the global heritage map.

Held over three days at the National Institute of Art History in Paris, the seminar saw the presentation of two scientific papers by the Dubai Culture delegation. These papers showcased the rich archaeological heritage of Dubai. The first paper, titled "Iron Age Artefacts Hoard Discovered at Saruq Al Hadid-53 Archaeological Site, Dubai-UAE," was presented by Mariam Al Suwaidi, Senior Archaeologist at Dubai Culture. The second paper, "Soil Corrosivity at Saruq al-Hadid and Al Qusais Archaeological Sites in Dubai (UAE), and its Effect on Metal Objects: A Comparative Study," was delivered by Zainab Ali Salmin, Senior Archaeological Conservator at Dubai Culture.

Al Suwaidi's paper detailed the history and significance of the Saruq Al-Hadid site, emphasizing a remarkable hoard of Iron Age artifacts discovered there. This hoard, considered one of the most important archaeological finds in the southeast Arabian Peninsula, was buried in a circular pit with a diameter of 90 cm and a depth of 50 cm. It contained 123 artifacts, mostly made of bronze, including cooking pots, hoes, chisels, mirrors, axe heads, ladles, small cups, scales, and a fishing hook. Additionally, the hoard included objects made from chlorite stone and seven iron items such as spearheads, a small handle, and a worked bone. The study highlighted the site's use for charcoal production, essential for metalworking, a key craft during the Iron Age. Methods used for dating the hoard, such as carbon-14 analysis of charcoal samples, were also discussed, along with future plans for the site.

Salmin's paper focused on developing conservation and restoration methods for artifacts discovered at the Al Qusais and Saruq Al-Hadid archaeological sites. The study analyzed environmental conditions and soil corrosivity at the two sites and their impact on buried metal artifacts, particularly bronze. Findings indicated that soil at Saruq Al-Hadid had a lesser corrosive effect on bronze artifacts compared to the clay-saline sediment at Al Qusais, which differently influenced the corrosion of discovered items.

Bader Mohamed Al Ali, Director of the Antiquities Department at Dubai Culture, emphasized the Authority's commitment to participating in international forums and specialized scientific conferences in archaeology. He highlighted the importance of these platforms in showcasing Dubai's archaeological sites and their value. Al Ali stated, "International conferences provide an inspiring space to highlight Dubai's historical significance, making it a destination for researchers and archaeologists. Our participation in IASA’s Seminar for Arabian Studies contributes to presenting a comprehensive view of Dubai's archaeological capabilities, fostering expertise exchange, and strengthening relations with international research institutes and excavation missions. Moreover, it enriches academics' historical and cultural knowledge through the studies conducted by our teams in documenting and safeguarding the emirate’s archaeological heritage, raising awareness and understanding of the lifestyles at these sites throughout different eras."

Dubai Culture's active involvement in such prestigious events underscores its dedication to preserving and promoting the rich archaeological heritage of Dubai, enhancing the emirate's stature on the global heritage stage.
