Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has made a big step in improving Dubai’s electricity network. HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, announced that the authority has completed 13 new 132kV power substations in 2024. These substations have a total conversion capacity of 1,950 megavolt amperes. To connect them to the main electricity network, DEWA also installed 127 kilometers of underground cables.
This work is part of DEWA’s plan to support Dubai’s rapid urban growth. The total investment in new and completed 132kV power transmission projects in 2024 has reached AED 2.1 billion.

Al Tayer said that DEWA is committed to helping citizens by improving housing services and ensuring a steady supply of electricity. He mentioned that this supports the Sheikha Hind bint Maktoum Family Programme, launched by Her Highness Sheikha Hind bint Maktoum bin Juma Al Maktoum, wife of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
“This initiative helps families in Dubai grow and enjoy a high standard of living. DEWA continues to expand its network to meet the increasing electricity demand and support Dubai’s Economic Agenda D33 and the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan. Our goal is to keep up with the city’s growing population and strengthen Dubai’s reputation as one of the best places in the world to live, work, and visit,” said Al Tayer.
The newly built substations will serve many areas, including Al Athbah, Nadd Hessa, Al Khawaneej 2, Wadi Al Amardi, and Al Aweer 1. Other areas that will benefit include Al Thanyah 3, Al Barsha South 4, International City Phase 2, Wadi Al Safa 5, Umm Suqeim 3, Al Hebiah 5, and Jebel Ali Industrial First.
Hussain Lootah, Executive Vice President of Transmission Power at DEWA, explained that completing these 13 substations took over 12 million safe working hours. DEWA used the latest technology while making sure safety and security standards were met. He also stated that by the end of 2024, Dubai will have 360 completed 132kV substations, with 37 more under construction. Additionally, there are 27 high-voltage 400kV substations, with two more currently being built.
This progress is a key part of DEWA’s long-term plan to ensure Dubai has a reliable electricity network to support its growing population and future developments.
