Delhi Heatwave Drives Power Demand to Record High Levels

Photo : ANI

India's capital, Delhi, is grappling with an extended and severe heatwave, resulting in unprecedented electricity demand peaking at 8,647 megawatts (MW) this week. Temperatures in the city and across northern India have soared to a sweltering 44-45°C for weeks, driving widespread use of cooling appliances like air conditioners. This surge in electricity consumption has strained resources, leading to frequent power outages across Delhi.

The record power demand on Tuesday followed a broader peak in northern India, which saw consumption spike to 89,000 MW the previous day. Delhi has experienced several record-breaking electricity demands this season, beginning with 8,000 MW on May 22. The strain on the city's power infrastructure was highlighted by a recent outage at Delhi's airport, disrupting terminal services as staff waited for systems to reboot.

Social media images captured the chaos as passengers endured long queues at check-in counters due to the outage. Concurrently, Delhi is contending with a severe water crisis, as evidenced by videos showing crowds with buckets waiting at water trucks.

The India Meteorological Department has forecasted the persistence of the heatwave over northern India in the coming days. Since the onset of summer in March, dozens of heat-related fatalities have been reported. In early June, more than 50 deaths occurred within three days in Uttar Pradesh and Odisha due to the extreme heat.

This year's summer in India has been particularly intense, characterized by prolonged, intense, and frequent heatwaves. Adding to the challenges, the weather department anticipates below-normal rainfall across the country in June, exacerbating concerns about water scarcity and agricultural impacts.

The situation underscores the urgent need for effective management of resources and infrastructure to mitigate the impact of extreme weather events on public health and daily life in India's most populous regions.
