The Southeast is reeling from the aftermath of Tropical Storm Debby, which brought a deadly tornado and heavy rainfall, wreaking havoc across North and South Carolina. On Thursday morning, tornadoes associated with Debby tore through North Carolina, causing significant destruction and claiming at least one life.

In Lucama, North Carolina, the tornado struck with little warning. Genesis Cooper, who lives in the town approximately 40 miles east of Raleigh, described a harrowing scene as he and his family huddled in their bathroom. The storm's impact was swift and severe, leaving Cooper's home severely damaged. Roofs were torn off, walls were collapsed, and windows shattered. Despite the extensive damage, Cooper remained hopeful, stating, "This is just stuff. It can be replaced."

The tornado that devastated Lucama was one of at least three reported in North Carolina overnight, with the most severe impact observed in Wilson County, where officials confirmed a fatality. Springfield Middle School, located in Wilson County, also sustained significant damage. Drone footage revealed that parts of the school's roof and walls were destroyed, exposing structural elements and leaving debris scattered across the grounds.

Tornado warnings were issued throughout North Carolina and Virginia, affecting over 17 million people. A tornado watch remained in effect until 7 a.m. Friday. Additionally, a dam north of Fayetteville, North Carolina, broke early Thursday due to the heavy rains. Although homes were evacuated, no injuries or structural damages were reported.

Flooding was also a major concern, with areas like Bladenboro experiencing severe water damage. Residents in the town faced deep standing water and road washouts. Forrest Lennon, owner of Diamond Dave's Grill in Bladenboro, noted the resilience of the community despite the restaurant suffering from floodwaters. "It could have been a lot worse," he said, reflecting on the previous hurricanes that had similarly impacted the area.

Debby, which made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane on the Gulf Coast of Florida earlier in the week, weakened to a tropical storm by Thursday afternoon. It brought relentless rain, leading to widespread flooding across the Carolinas. The National Hurricane Center reported that Debby's maximum sustained winds had decreased to around 35 mph. The storm continued to impact the region with up to 6 additional inches of rain expected in the Carolinas. Parts of Maryland, New York, and Vermont are also projected to receive significant rainfall.

In Georgia, residents faced ongoing threats of flooding from rivers swollen by the storm's rains. The Ogeechee River near Savannah was expected to reach its major flood stage, prompting evacuation orders for those living near the river. Effingham County emergency officials reported that 17 people had been rescued from flood-threatened homes.

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster warned that the effects of Debby are not yet over, as rains in North Carolina could exacerbate flooding downstream. Coastal areas are also dealing with the aftermath, with homeowners like Robert Chesnut on the Isle of Palms facing a daunting clean-up task. Chesnut, using an industrial pump to remove water from his home, described the challenge of dealing with contaminated floodwaters.

Overall, Tropical Storm Debby’s impact has been profound, leaving communities grappling with the aftermath of its destructive force. As the storm's remnants continue to affect the region, recovery efforts are underway amid ongoing weather-related challenges.
