Edmonton – Conservative Member of Parliament Matt Jeneroux announced Thursday that he is resigning from his seat, making him the second Conservative MP to leave the party this week following the release of the federal budget. Jeneroux, who has represented Edmonton Riverbend since 2015, did not specify a detailed reason for his departure in his statement, describing the decision as difficult but necessary.

“It was not an easy decision, but it is, I believe, the right one,” Jeneroux said, expressing admiration for his fellow MPs across party lines and emphasizing his belief in Canada’s continued progress toward unity and strength.

Jeneroux, who had supported the Conservative Party under leader Pierre Poilievre in the last federal election, noted that while the election outcome did not meet his expectations, he maintains respect for the dedication of Parliament members. He added that he had informed the Opposition Whip of his resignation earlier in the day and hopes to deliver a final address to the House of Commons before leaving.

The MP confirmed he will now focus entirely on his family and personal responsibilities, stepping away from political duties. Notably, Jeneroux did not participate in Thursday night’s Conservative sub-amendment to the federal budget, which the Prime Minister declared a confidence vote. The government survived the vote with support from other opposition parties.

Jeneroux’s resignation follows closely after Nova Scotia MP Chris d’Entremont crossed the floor to join the Liberals, sparking speculation that additional Conservative MPs may leave the party due to concerns over Poilievre’s leadership. D’Entremont suggested that others share similar sentiments regarding the party’s direction.

In his resignation statement, Jeneroux expressed gratitude to supporters and requested that his family not be contacted during this period. “Although the outcome was not what I anticipated, I have great admiration for the many remarkable individuals who were elected to the House of Commons – on both sides of the aisle – who continue to dedicate themselves to the betterment of our nation,” he said.

The departure of Matt Jeneroux marks a notable moment for the Conservative Party, highlighting internal tensions amid discussions over the federal budget and party leadership. Political analysts suggest that these developments may influence ongoing debates and strategies as the party prepares for future parliamentary sessions.
