Canada Evacuates High-Security Prison Amid Quebec Forest Fire Crisis

A maximum-security prison in Quebec, Canada, housing approximately 225 inmates had to undergo evacuation due to widespread forest fires engulfing the region. Confirmation of the evacuation came from Correctional Service Canada, as reported by Global News. The affected facility, Port-Cartier Institution, issued a statement on Sunday, assuring that all prisoners were safely transferred to other secure federal correctional facilities following an evacuation order for Port-Cartier City.

Measures were implemented to ensure the safety of staff, the public, and inmates during the evacuation operation, which was initiated on Friday amidst growing concerns about wildfire threats. Anne Kelly, Commissioner of the Correctional Service of Canada, expressed gratitude to all involved in the complex operation, emphasizing the priority placed on safety for all parties involved.

The institution is notable for housing notorious inmates, including Canadian serial killer Robert Pickton and Luka Magnotta, known for a high-profile murder case involving an international student. Magnotta was relocated to a medium-security facility in 2022 under controversial circumstances, with staff instructed to keep the move confidential.

Simultaneously, a broader evacuation order was issued for residents of Port-Cartier due to the advancing forest fires. Mayor Alain Thibault declared a state of emergency and urged residents in specific areas to evacuate immediately. Provincial Public Security Minister François Bonnardel announced compensation measures for evacuated residents, highlighting the severity of the fire threat in the region, which was attributed to lightning strikes by Quebec’s forest fire prevention agency.

The situation underscores ongoing challenges posed by natural disasters and the coordinated response efforts required to ensure public safety and manage critical infrastructure such as high-security prisons during emergencies.
