British Teen Feared Dead After Disappearing in Romania’s Bucegi Mountains

Bucegi Mountains, Romania | DXB News Network

An 18-year-old British teenager who went missing during a solo hike in Romania’s Bucegi Mountains is now believed to have died, according to a statement released by his family, as search operations remain severely hampered by extreme weather conditions.

The teenager, George Smyth, a student at the University of Bristol from Newport in Shropshire, disappeared on 23 November 2025 after setting out alone on a hike in the mountainous region near the town of Bran, an area popular with tourists and hikers.

According to Romanian authorities, George made an emergency call to the national rescue number 112 later that day, reporting that he was lost, physically exhausted, and suffering from symptoms consistent with hypothermia. His phone signal was traced to a remote, high-altitude area of the Bucegi range.

Search Operations and Findings

Romania’s mountain rescue service Salvamont Brașov, along with local authorities, launched an extensive search operation involving:

  • Trained mountain rescue teams

  • Helicopters

  • Drones with thermal imaging

  • Sniffer dogs

During the operation, George’s backpack was found close to the area where the emergency call was made. The bag reportedly contained camping equipment and supplies, indicating he had planned to camp overnight.

However, search efforts have been repeatedly suspended due to:

  • Heavy snowfall

  • Poor visibility

  • Freezing temperatures

  • High avalanche risk

These dangerous conditions have made ground and aerial searches unsafe in several areas.

Family Statement

In a public statement, George’s family said they now believe he is “lost to us,” acknowledging the likelihood that he did not survive the harsh mountain conditions.

They described him as a kind and compassionate young man and expressed gratitude to rescue teams and supporters involved in the search. The family also said they hope George’s body will eventually be recovered so he can be brought home.

Official Response

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) confirmed it is in contact with Romanian authorities and is providing consular support to the family.
The University of Bristol also issued a statement expressing concern and confirming ongoing support for George’s relatives.

Romanian officials stated that while active search operations are currently limited, monitoring of the area will continue, and searches may resume if weather conditions improve.

Background

The Bucegi Mountains, part of Romania’s Southern Carpathians, are known for rapidly changing and severe weather conditions, especially in late autumn and winter. Mountain rescue authorities have repeatedly warned hikers about the dangers of solo trekking in the region during colder months.
