Australia's Ambassador to the United States, Kevin Rudd, deleted a series of past comments he made about former U.S. President Donald Trump after the latter's election victory, stating that they no longer reflected his position or the official stance of the Australian government. Rudd, a former prime minister, had made the controversial remarks while serving as the head of the Asia Society, a U.S.-based think tank, before being appointed as Australia's ambassador.
The comments, which included Rudd's 2020 characterization of Trump as "the most destructive president in history," were removed from Rudd's personal website and social media platforms. According to a statement issued by his office, this decision was made out of respect for the office of the U.S. presidency and the election of Trump for a second term. The statement emphasized that Rudd wanted to ensure there was no misunderstanding or misinterpretation of his previous remarks as reflecting his official views as Ambassador or, by extension, the views of the Australian government.
Rudd's comments about Trump had garnered significant attention when they were first made, particularly his stark criticism of Trump's handling of both domestic and international issues during his presidency. However, with Trump’s electoral victory, Rudd felt it was necessary to distance himself from those past statements, particularly as they might be seen as politically charged or inappropriate given his current diplomatic role.

Australia's Foreign Minister, Penny Wong, reaffirmed the importance of the Australia-U.S. relationship, particularly under Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s leadership. She emphasized the continued support for key agreements such as the AUKUS pact, which involves Australia purchasing nuclear-powered submarines from the U.S. as part of a broader security strategy in the Indo-Pacific region. Wong also noted that the current Australian government was confident in its alignment with the U.S., despite any previous political differences.
In public comments, Wong also expressed confidence in Rudd's ability to work effectively with the incoming Trump administration, highlighting bipartisan support for critical agreements like AUKUS. Wong further clarified that both countries share common strategic interests, particularly in ensuring regional stability and peace, with continued backing from both Republican and Democrat factions in the U.S.
Rudd’s comments about Trump had also been met with criticism from the former president, who had responded in a British TV interview earlier in the year, calling Rudd "not the brightest bulb" and "nasty." Trump went on to suggest that Rudd wouldn’t hold his position for long if he continued to make such remarks.
Rudd, who had been serving as the CEO of the Asia Society in New York until 2023, was appointed Australia’s Ambassador to the U.S. later that year. His diplomatic role requires him to represent Australia’s interests while maintaining a positive relationship with both parties of the U.S. political spectrum. Despite the past disagreements, Wong expressed her support for Rudd’s diplomatic work and his ability to effectively navigate the complexities of the U.S.-Australia alliance.
