The UAE Ministry of Economy has announced a significant rise in intellectual property (IP) registrations during the first nine months of 2024, reflecting the nation’s commitment to fostering an environment conducive to innovation. This growth highlights the UAE's efforts to create a thriving ecosystem that supports research, development, and entrepreneurship across various sectors, positioning the country as a leading hub for intellectual property.
According to the Ministry's report, the registration of trademarks, patents, utility certificates, and industrial designs has seen marked increases, indicating that both economic and scientific sectors are flourishing. The data reveals that IP registrations in the UAE grew by an impressive 34.3 percent in the first nine months of 2024, with trademarks alone seeing a 39.12 percent rise. Additionally, patents, utility certificates, and industrial designs increased by 8 percent when compared to the same period in 2023.
In total, the Ministry registered 1,884 new IP works between January and September 2024, up from 1,402 registrations during the same period in 2023. This brings the total number of IP works registered in the country to 20,389, underlining the growth in the sector. Alongside this surge in registrations, there was a marked increase in demand for IP protection across various industries. The Ministry received 1,946 IP registration applications, a 53.23 percent rise compared to the 1,270 applications filed in the same months of 2023.

The Ministry also saw an increase in IP violation reports, with 153 filings received, and a rise in applications for registering importers and distributors of IP rights, which grew by 26.67 percent, bringing the total to 209 applications.
One of the most notable statistics is the 39 percent rise in trademark registrations. As of September 2024, the UAE saw the addition of 18,175 new trademarks, taking the total number of active trademarks in the UAE market to 356,408. This surge indicates the growing recognition of the importance of trademarks in protecting brand identity and ensuring business competitiveness.
In the area of patents, utility certificates, and industrial designs, there was an 8 percent increase, reaching a total of 15,051 registrations by the end of September 2024. The number of applications for patents and related protections also rose by 3.8 percent, with 3,489 applications received, compared to 3,357 in the same period in 2023.
Abdullah Ahmed Al Saleh, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Economy, emphasized that these results highlight the UAE’s determination to develop a robust intellectual property ecosystem that meets global standards. This growth not only reflects the nation’s focus on advancing legislation to protect intellectual property but also showcases the government’s dedication to supporting innovation, creativity, and economic development. Al Saleh stressed that the Ministry, in collaboration with both public and private sector entities, is committed to providing the necessary resources to help the IP sector grow and enhance its global competitiveness.
This effort is in alignment with the UAE’s long-term vision encapsulated in the ‘We the UAE 2031’ strategy, which aims to position the UAE among the world’s top 10 destinations for global talent. The significant strides in intellectual property registrations serve as a testament to the UAE's ongoing efforts to build a knowledge-driven economy that fosters creativity and global competitiveness.
The Ministry of Economy’s focus on nurturing a dynamic IP ecosystem through legislative advancements and strategic initiatives is contributing to the UAE’s emergence as a leading player in the global IP landscape, creating new opportunities for businesses, entrepreneurs, and innovators in the region.
