World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka has voiced her stance on transgender athletes' inclusion in women’s sports, contending that competing against “biological men” in professional tennis is unjust. Her remarks, made during a discussion with Piers Morgan, emphasize her belief in fairness within sports, rather than an opposition to transgender people.

Currently, the WTA Gender Participation Policy permits transgender women to compete after identifying as female for a minimum of four years, lowering testosterone to specific levels, and adhering to medical protocols. The WTA is also open to evaluating unique cases individually through its medical team.

Sabalenka pointed out that women invest years of effort to achieve competitive positions, expressing concerns that they may struggle against athletes who benefit from the advantages rooted in male puberty. A four-time Grand Slam champion, she advocates for equality while insisting that competitive fairness must prevail. She shared her thoughts in light of her upcoming “Battle of the Sexes” exhibition match against Nick Kyrgios on December 28.

Kyrgios backed Sabalenka's views, remarking that her concerns resonate with many in the athletic community. Currently, there are no openly transgender players in professional tennis, but the historical case of Renee Richards, who played on the women's tour from 1977 to 1981, stands out. Richards later coached renowned player and LGBT advocate Martina Navratilova, who has consistently raised alarms about the implications of transgender participation in women's sports.

In contrast, tennis legend Billie Jean King argues against the exclusion of transgender athletes, viewing it as a form of discrimination. Similar discussions are unfolding in various sports. In 2024, the UK's Lawn Tennis Association revised its rules to bar transgender women from competing in national and interclub female categories.

Recently, several global sports organizations have introduced new regulations, often disallowing individuals who have undergone male puberty from competing in elite women's events. Proponents of these changes assert that the physical advantages of male puberty endure, while organizations advocating for transgender rights contend that such exclusions are both discriminatory and damaging.

This topic remains one of the most contentious in the sports world, with ongoing debates among athletes, governing bodies, scientists, and advocates for equality.
