As the world’s leading player, Aryna Sabalenka returns to the Australian Open, facing heightened expectations. This year marks a significant change, as she competes without a title to defend for the first time in three years, along with a notable absence of her prior dominance at this Grand Slam event.
A two-time champion at Melbourne Park, Sabalenka had transformed the tournament into her fortress, showcasing an impressive 20-match winning streak. However, that momentum was broken last year when Madison Keys surprised her in the final, denying Sabalenka a chance at clinching a remarkable third consecutive title, a feat that has not been achieved since Martina Hingis over two decades ago.
Despite missing out on last year’s title, Sabalenka remains the unmatched leader in women’s tennis. Her powerful groundstrokes, exceptional serve, and increasing mental fortitude distinguish her from her peers. Nevertheless, her recent lack of success in Melbourne casts a shadow of doubt and curiosity over her 2026 journey.
This time around, she approaches the tournament without the confidence of a recent winning streak on Australian soil. Although her early season has shown promise, it hasn’t been standout, raising questions about how soon she can regain her peak form.
Nevertheless, Sabalenka has historically thrived under pressure. As the top seed, she will be the central target, with her rivals ready to exploit any sign of vulnerability. Her ability to reset mentally and reclaim her dominance on Rod Laver Arena is set to be a pivotal narrative in this year’s Australian Open.
