Allies Breathe Sigh of Relief Over Le Pen's Loss, Cite Concerns on Coalition Challenges in France

Paris: Allies of France breathed a collective sigh of relief as Marine Le Pen's far-right party, the National Rally (RN), fell short in a recent snap election on Sunday. The potential for France to elect its first far-right government since World War Two had sparked widespread concern among international partners. The outcome avoided what many feared could disrupt economic and foreign policy in the eurozone's second-largest economy.

Ukraine and its allies had particularly worried that a Le Pen-led government might soften France's stance towards Moscow, potentially impacting military aid crucial since Russia's 2022 invasion. Despite assurances from Le Pen's party regarding Russia's threat, anxieties persisted.

The defeat of the National Rally indicates a temporary setback for far-right movements in Europe. However, it sets the stage for potential political instability, with expectations of a new government facing challenges in cohabitation with President Emmanuel Macron.

Reacting to the election results, various international leaders expressed mixed emotions. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk remarked, "In Paris enthusiasm, in Moscow disappointment, in Kyiv relief. Enough to be happy in Warsaw."

President Macron had called for the snap election to counter Le Pen's rising influence, but his party trailed behind a leftist alliance that unexpectedly seized the lead. Overseas reactions ranged from relief to caution over the complexities of forming a coalition amidst unclear parliamentary majorities.

Nils Schmid, foreign policy spokesperson for Germany's Social Democrats, described the outcome as averting the worst while acknowledging Macron's political challenges ahead. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's party praised the leftist alliance's victory for preventing far-right governance in France.

In Greece, Nikos Androulakis of the Socialist PASOK party hailed the French electorate for upholding republican values against far-right ideologies. Colombian President Gustavo Petro commended France for what he called a decisive battle for humanity's future.

An unnamed EU official expressed immense relief but highlighted uncertainties for daily European governance in the aftermath.

The election left France's parliament divided among leftist, centrist, and far-right factions, each with divergent agendas and no precedent for collaboration. Leftist priorities include capping prices on essential goods amid a budget deficit exceeding EU limits.

Italy's Senator Claudio Borghi criticized the fiscal implications, while Portugal's far-right leader Andre Ventura lamented perceived setbacks in economic policy and immigration reform.

Capital Economics warned of challenges ahead, noting France's difficulty in enacting necessary budget cuts amid parliamentary discord and potential clashes with EU fiscal policies.

The election outcome underscores deep political divisions in France and raises questions about future governance amidst economic pressures and competing ideological agendas.
