Al-Shifa Hospital Leader Accuses Israel of Palestinian Prisoner Abuse

TEL AVIV — Shortly after his release from Israeli detention alongside 54 other Palestinian prisoners, Dr. Muhammad Abu Salmiya, director of Gaza City’s Al Shifa Hospital, accused Israel of mistreating Palestinian detainees. His release sparked controversy and criticism among right-wing Israeli lawmakers and security officials.

Dr. Abu Salmiya, who had been held for over seven months without charge or trial, described the conditions he witnessed in Israeli prisons as "tragic," citing severe shortages of food and drink. He alleged that Palestinian prisoners were subjected to assault and insult, a claim reiterated by Gaza's Hamas-run Health Ministry.

In response, the Israel Prison Service declined immediate comment on the allegations of mistreatment but reiterated its commitment to operating within legal provisions and respecting prisoners' rights.

The prisoner release prompted strong reactions within Israel's political landscape. Itamar Ben Gvir, the country’s ultranationalist Minister of National Security, criticized the decision as a security risk and called for repercussions against those responsible. Benny Gantz, a prominent political figure, condemned the release, alleging it included militants involved in recent attacks on Israel.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office labeled Dr. Abu Salmiya's release a "severe error and a moral failure," distancing itself from the decision and initiating an investigation into the circumstances.

The controversy highlighted broader tensions within Israeli governance over security policies and responses to Gaza-related issues. Meanwhile, international scrutiny of the situation in Gaza, including the treatment of medical workers and civilians, continues amid ongoing conflict and humanitarian concerns.
