Kings' Kuemper, Bruins' Swayman Ready to Fight Before Refs Stopped It

Los Angeles Kings goalie Darcy Kuemper and Boston Bruins goalie Jeremy Swayman almost had a big fight on Sunday night. But before they could start, the referees stopped them.

The trouble began in the second part of the game. The Kings won 7-2, but before that, Bruins player Marat Khusnutdinov hit Kuemper. This happened because Kings player Tanner Jeannot pushed Khusnutdinov from behind. The referees gave Khusnutdinov a penalty for hitting Kuemper.

Kuemper got very angry. He held Khusnutdinov by the head, pulled off his helmet, and got a penalty for rough play. Swayman did not like this. He skated to the middle of the ice and called Kuemper to fight. Kuemper took off his gloves, ready to fight. Swayman also took off his gloves and helmet.

Before they could punch each other, the referees ran in. One referee stopped Swayman, and another referee held Kuemper back. In the end, both goalies got penalties for leaving their spots.

After the game, Swayman said, "He touched my teammate. I cannot allow that. He was ready to fight, but the referees stopped it."

Kings player Adrian Kempe said, "These things happen. Fans like it, I think."

There has not been a goalie fight in the NHL since February 1, 2020, when Edmonton’s Mike Smith fought Calgary’s Cam Talbot. Other goalies have tried to fight, but referees always stop them.

Kings coach Jim Hiller was happy the fight didn’t happen. He said, "Nobody wants this... well, maybe the fans do. But coaches don’t. We don’t want goalies to get hurt."

The Kings have the best home record in the NHL, and Kuemper has not lost at home since December 7. Hiller said he was glad the referees acted fast. He added, "Goalies don’t move as fast as other players, so it’s easier for referees to stop them."
