The rule was made according to Law No. (16) of 2005, which reorganizes EAD and gives it the power to create rules and decisions. This law helps reduce pollution and protect the quality of air, water, soil, and natural resources, while ensuring that these resources are used carefully to protect both people and the environment. EAD worked closely with other authorities in Abu Dhabi while preparing the rule, following the official process for making laws in the emirate.
The rule applies to protected areas, unused or undeveloped land, and polluted or exposed sites in the emirate. It also applies to soils that fall under the environmental license given by EAD for a facility or project. The rule explains how to assess the risks of soil pollution in these areas, according to any environmental impact assessments or studies needed by EAD for facilities and projects that require an environmental license. It also provides steps for cleaning up polluted sites by creating and carrying out plans based on early or detailed assessments.
Her Excellency Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of EAD, said that this rule is part of creating laws that protect different parts of the environment in Abu Dhabi, including soil. The rule will help manage the harmful effects that may come from development, industrial, tourism, and other activities, supporting the agency’s mission to protect and sustain the environment for future generations.
Her Excellency also said that the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi will implement the rule in coordination with its partners and follow organized steps to achieve the goals set in the resolution.
