95-Year-Old Holocaust Denier Convicted Again in Germany

Hamburg: Ursula Haverbeck, a 95-year-old German woman notorious for denying the Holocaust, was sentenced to 16 months in prison by a Hamburg court on Wednesday. The court convicted her of repeatedly denying the Nazi genocide, including remarks made during the 2015 trial of a former Nazi camp guard.

During the trial, Haverbeck reiterated her claims that the Auschwitz concentration camp served only as a labor camp and denied that mass murder occurred there, according to prosecutors. This conviction took into account her previous legal troubles and her use of court proceedings to propagate her controversial views, as stated by a court spokeswoman to AFP.

Supporters of Haverbeck disrupted the proceedings with heckling, reflecting her polarizing influence among far-right groups. She previously headed a far-right training center shut down in 2008 for disseminating Nazi propaganda.

This latest sentence follows multiple prior convictions for Holocaust denial, including statements aired on television where she infamously called the Holocaust "the biggest and most sustained lie in history." Haverbeck's legal troubles were compounded by an unsuccessful appeal related to her comments during the trial of Oskar Groening, a former Auschwitz guard convicted of aiding murder.

Delays in the trial were attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic and health issues. The sentencing also considered a separate 2022 conviction in Berlin for remarks made in an interview and at an event.

German law prohibits Holocaust denial and incitement to hatred, punishable by up to five years in prison. The Auschwitz-Birkenau camp alone claimed approximately 1.1 million lives, mostly Jews, under Adolf Hitler's regime. The use of Nazi symbols, including swastikas, is also strictly prohibited.

It remains uncertain whether Haverbeck will serve her sentence, given her age and potential health considerations.
