At least seven individuals lost their lives and several others sustained injuries on Monday due to a blast at a coal mine in Birbhum district, West Bengal. The explosion occurred at the Gangaramchak Mining Private Limited colliery, situated in the Lokpur area, while workers were executing controlled explosions to extract coal.

Following the blast, both workers and senior officials of the company hurriedly evacuated the site in search of safety. Disturbing visuals from the scene revealed the lifeless bodies of victims lying on the ground alongside damaged vehicles that had been parked nearby.

Local police responded promptly to the emergency call, arriving at the location shortly after the incident. They worked quickly to transport the injured individuals to a nearby medical facility for urgent care.

This tragic event comes in the wake of a similar incident earlier this year in January 2023 when a roof collapse in a coal mine in Kulti, West Bengal, trapped several people who were illegally mining. That mine, owned by Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), highlighted ongoing safety issues within the coal mining sector in the region.

Authorities are expected to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the recent blast to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.
