In Karachi, a separatist militant assault in the restive southwestern Balochistan region on Monday resulted in the death of at least 15 individuals, including two civilians and four law enforcement agents, as reported by the Pakistani military. The attack targeted the Mach and Kolpur complexes in Balochistan, with militants, including suicide bombers, involved in the assault, according to the Inter Services Public Relations agency (ISPR) of the Pakistan military. The ISPR stated that at least nine militants, including three suicide bombers, were killed during the incident.
The ISPR mentioned in a statement, "Security forces in the vicinity were immediately mobilised who are carrying out ensuing operation."
The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), the most prominent among various separatist groups in Balochistan, claimed responsibility for the attack. The BLA's objective is to attain independence for Balochistan, a mountainous and mineral-rich province, which is Pakistan's largest by territory but the smallest in terms of population. The region has been grappling with a prolonged insurgency.
Balochistan shares borders with Afghanistan to the north and Iran to the west, while its long coastline extends along the Arabian Sea. It houses Pakistan's largest natural gas field and is believed to possess numerous undiscovered reserves. Additionally, Balochistan is rich in precious metals, including gold, with growing production in recent years. The province holds strategic importance in China's extensive China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a crucial component of President Xi Jinping's expansive Belt and Road infrastructure initiative.
