YouTube never misses a chance to remind users about its Premium subscription. Whether it's by showing more ads or offering exclusive features, the platform is always trying to get more people to upgrade. Just recently, YouTube introduced Premium Lite for $7.99 per month, giving users an ad-free experience at a lower price. And now, they seem to be working on yet another feature—one that lets users control the audio quality of videos. But as expected, it might not be available for everyone.
YouTube's New Audio Quality Option
A report from Android Authority has revealed that YouTube is experimenting with a new audio control feature. This was discovered in the latest Beta version of the app, where a string of code suggests that users may soon get the option to choose their audio quality while watching videos.

According to the findings, YouTube is testing three different audio presets:
Auto: Adjusts audio quality based on internet speed.
Normal: Plays at a standard 128kbps bitrate (48KHz).
High: Provides better audio quality with a higher bitrate.
This would be similar to how YouTube lets users choose video quality, where Premium subscribers get access to higher bitrate streaming for better visuals.
Why This Feature Matters
Right now, YouTube only plays audio at 128kbps, no matter how high the video resolution is. This means that even if you're watching a 4K video, the sound quality remains the same. For people who care about good audio, this can be frustrating. With this new feature, YouTube could finally improve the listening experience, making videos sound as great as they look.
The Catch: It Might Be for YouTube Premium Only
There’s one downside, though. The hidden code suggests that this feature could be exclusive to YouTube Premium subscribers. This wouldn’t be surprising, as YouTube often tests new features with Premium users first before deciding whether to make them available for everyone.
While it’s exciting that YouTube is finally improving audio quality, it’s disappointing that free users may not get access to this option. For now, we’ll have to wait and see if YouTube decides to roll it out to everyone or keep it behind a paywall.
