United Airlines Raises Lounge Fees to Combat Overcrowding

Post by: Bandan Preet

United Airlines Holdings Inc. has announced that it will be increasing the prices for its airport lounge memberships. This move comes as the airline tries to deal with the growing problem of overcrowding in its lounges, which has become more common since the pandemic.

From now on, individual United Club memberships will cost $750 per year or 94,000 reward miles for members of the airline’s MileagePlus loyalty program. Previously, the annual membership fee was $650 or 85,000 miles. In addition to the price hike, United is introducing a new membership option called the “All Access” tier. This premium membership will cost $1,400 per year or 175,000 miles. It will allow certain guests traveling with the member to also access the lounge.

The decision to raise the fees comes as airport lounges have become increasingly crowded. Since the pandemic, more travelers have been signing up for airline loyalty programs and applying for credit cards linked to airlines. These cards often offer access to lounges as part of their perks. As a result, the demand for these comfortable spaces has surged.

United’s lounges offer free food, drinks, and cozy seating areas. They are a popular benefit for frequent travelers and a key selling point for co-branded credit cards, which bring in significant revenue for airlines. However, in recent years, the lounges have become so packed that long lines often stretch into the airport terminals, making the experience less enjoyable.

To address this, major US airlines have been expanding their lounge areas and opening more locations. They are also making some lounges more exclusive by limiting access.

United’s new membership prices will take effect immediately. However, customers with existing memberships will continue to enjoy their current benefits until their memberships expire.
