Her family shared the sad news saying, "With great sadness, we announce that Dame Joan Plowright, the Lady Olivier, passed away peacefully at Denville Hall at the age of 95. She will always be remembered for her amazing career, and her family and friends will cherish her forever."
Joan spent most of her career performing in the theatre, often acting with her husband, Laurence Olivier. After he passed away in 1989, she began acting in movies and TV shows.
One of her most famous films was *Enchanted April* (1991), where she played a sharp character named Mrs. Fisher. She was very close to winning an Oscar for this role but lost to Marisa Tomei. Another important movie was *Tea with Mussolini* (1999), where she acted with other famous actresses, Maggie Smith and Judi Dench.
Joan also won two Golden Globe Awards in 1993 for her work in *Enchanted April* and for the TV show *Stalin*. She was part of popular films like *Dennis the Menace*, *Last Action Hero*, and *101 Dalmatians*, which made her known to younger people.
Joan won a Tony Award for her role in the play *A Taste of Honey* in 1961. She later focused on supporting her husband as he worked with the Chichester Festival Theatre and started the National Theatre. She acted in the play *Uncle Vanya* with her husband, receiving praise for her performance. Joan also took breaks from her career to raise her children.
As she got older, Joan had macular degeneration, which caused her to lose her sight. This led her to retire from acting in 2014. She said that after living a full and happy life, it was time for her to stop acting.
In honor of Joan’s career, the Olivier Awards, named after her husband, announced that the lights in theatres in London’s West End would be dimmed for two minutes on Tuesday evening. This is a special way to remember the woman who had a huge impact on theatre and film.
