Etihad Rail, Oman Rail, and Mubadala Investment Company have embarked on a significant milestone with the commencement of construction for the Omani-Emirati railway network project. This monumental step was formalized through an agreement signed during the state visit of Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, Sultan of Oman, to the UAE.
In attendance during the signing of the shareholder agreement was Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Development and Fallen Heroes' Affairs, and Chairman of Etihad Rail.
This joint railway endeavor, requiring a substantial investment of US$3 billion, is poised to elevate both the UAE and Oman as pivotal gateways to regional markets. Beyond economic implications, the project holds the promise of fostering job creation across diverse sectors within both nations.

Formerly known as Oman-Etihad Rail Company, the joint venture has been rebranded as Hafeet Rail, a name that holds symbolic significance. It pays homage to Jebel Hafeet, a prominent mountain range that spans between the Sultanate of Oman and the UAE. Jebel Hafeet's strategic location and historical importance have long served as a vital link between the two neighboring countries, characterized by rugged terrain encompassing mountains, deserts, and unique limestone formations.
The envisioned network is set to streamline cross-border trade by linking commercial ports to railways within each country's borders. Notably, a single freight train journey is expected to have the capacity to transport over 15,000 tonnes of cargo or approximately 270 standard containers.
Hafeet Rail's impact transcends the realm of commerce, extending to the development of various sectors including mining, iron and steel, agriculture and food, retail, e-commerce, and the petrochemical industry. Furthermore, the introduction of passenger rail services holds promise for enhancing social connectivity and supporting the burgeoning tourism sector.
The envisaged passenger trains are designed for efficiency, with speeds of up to 200 kilometers per hour. For instance, the journey between Sohar and Abu Dhabi is estimated to take only 100 minutes, while the distance between Sohar and Al Ain could be covered in just 47 minutes. Each train has the capacity to accommodate up to 400 passengers, promising enhanced accessibility and convenience for travelers.
