In 2024, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) became a global leader in aviation, achieving a significant milestone by offering 87.1 million seats on flights. This marks a 10.5% increase from 2023 and a 15% rise compared to 2019, before the pandemic. These figures demonstrate the UAE’s continued investment in aviation infrastructure and its focus on sustainable practices. The UAE has become a model for other countries, with its airports now handling over 400,000 passengers and 10,000 tonnes of cargo daily. This growth is largely driven by key national carriers such as Emirates, Etihad Airways, flydubai, and Air Arabia, which expanded their flight networks worldwide. In December 2024 alone, these airlines offered 6.39 million seats, showing the extent of their contribution to the UAE’s success.
The UAE’s aviation sector grew faster than the global average, with a 15% growth compared to just 2.4% growth in global aviation since 2019. In 2023, global aviation grew by 6.4%, while the UAE’s growth rate was much higher at 10.5%. This strong performance highlights the UAE’s successful strategies, investments in airport expansions, and improvements in the passenger experience. The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) predicts that passenger traffic in UAE airports will reach 150 million by the end of 2024, up from 134 million in 2023.

The UAE also made major progress in airport development. One of the most notable projects is the construction of a new terminal at Al Maktoum International Airport, which has a budget of AED 128 billion ($34 billion). When completed, this terminal will be the largest airport in the world, capable of handling 260 million passengers annually. The UAE also marked the opening of Zayed International Airport (AUH) in Abu Dhabi, which has received global recognition for its innovative design and excellent passenger experience. Zayed International Airport won prestigious awards, including the "World’s Leading Airport Operator" and the "World’s Most Beautiful Airport" at the Prix Versailles Awards.
Dubai International Airport has remained the leader in international flight capacity, even surpassing Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in rankings for both international and domestic flight capacities twice in 2024. This highlights Dubai’s status as one of the busiest and most important airports in the world.
UAE Airlines achieved great recognition in 2024 as well. Emirates Airlines won multiple awards, including being named the best airline in the world at the 2024 World Travel Awards. Emirates also received seven awards at the Skytrax World Airline Awards, underlining its dominance in the industry. Etihad Airways was recognized for offering the best Economy Class, best in-flight entertainment, and best First Class Lounge. Flydubai and Air Arabia also expanded their networks, further strengthening the UAE’s position as a leading global aviation hub.
In terms of sustainability, the UAE has placed a strong emphasis on environmentally friendly aviation practices. In 2024, the country introduced several initiatives to reduce aviation’s environmental impact. This includes increasing the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), which helps reduce carbon emissions. UAE service providers like dnata have also started implementing greener operations at airports, focusing on reducing emissions from ground services. Another major environmental project is the installation of the world’s largest solar panel setup on an airport rooftop at Dubai Airport. The solar energy from these panels will meet 6.5% of Dubai International Airport’s energy needs and 20% of Al Maktoum International Airport’s needs. UAE carriers operate some of the youngest aircraft fleets in the world, with an average age of 12 to 15 years, which helps reduce fuel consumption and lower emissions.
The growth of the UAE’s aviation sector has had a significant impact on both the local and global travel industries. Locally, the increase in passenger and cargo traffic has provided a boost to the economy, strengthening the UAE’s position as a major trade and tourism hub. The expansion of infrastructure and services has also improved the overall travel experience, attracting more tourists and business travelers. Globally, the UAE has become a key hub for travel, connecting people from the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and beyond. Its commitment to sustainable aviation practices has set an example for other countries, encouraging them to adopt similar green initiatives.
Looking ahead, the UAE’s aviation sector is set to continue its growth. With ongoing projects to expand airport capacity, an ever-growing network of flight routes, and a continued focus on sustainability, the UAE is poised to maintain its position as a global leader in aviation for years to come. By balancing growth with innovation and environmental responsibility, the UAE is setting a new standard for global air travel and ensuring that its aviation industry meets the needs of modern travelers.
